I got The Wizard of Oz at our library on Friday and it is really good. Look for it at your library.
It is the original version from 1910. It is only thirteen minutes long and there's no sound but its really good.

Dorothy is played by BeBe Daniels but she was only 9 years old when she made this movie. The scarecrow, the tin man, and the "wizard" look just like in the version that Judy Garland is in. But the other characters are different.

The witches are Glinda the good, but they don't have technology to make her a bubble so they just sort of have her come out from behind a bush.
The bad witch is named Momba and they do have good technology because they pour water on her and she does not melt, she literally just vanishes from the screen like poof she's gone.

They have some people dressed as mules that dance around and its kind of weird but its funny.

When they have the storm, they hide Dorothy in a haystack and then people throw stuff across the screen to make it look like its windy.

They also hang people from wires to look like they can fly in the air.

This version is different in that Dorothy meets the scarecrow before she goes to Oz, he is a scarecrow on her aunt's farm.

Also the end is different. You should look for it. Its good and its neat cause its so old (from 1910) and it has a famous silent movie star (when she was a little girl) playing Dorothy. Its really good.

If you buy the new 3-disc Oz set, the third disc comes with all the previous Oz silent movies done before the 1939 version.

The first one was the 1910 version you speak of. Also on there are 2 Oz silent movies from 1914, a silent movie from 1925 with Oliver Hardy in it and a cartoon from 1933. So far I've only watched the one from 1910.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I didn't know that! 12yo DD has asked for the new Oz set for Christmas. I'm not a fan, but I love old movies, I'd like to see the earlier versions.

The 3-Disc DVD set is amazing. Don't get the 2-Disc if you're interested in these old movies, it's the third disc that has these, along with a bunch of stuff dedicated to L. Frank Baum.

Make sure you get the 3 disc set. It's harder to find than the 2 disc. I actually have both because I bought the 2 disc set then some one on the board told me about the 3 disc so I had to go back out to try to find it.

I got my 3 disc set from CostCo. You can probably also get it on amazon. Not only does it come with 3 discs but it comes with these cool postcards and reproductions of memorabilia for when Oz came out in 1939. The 2nd disc is commentary on the movie.

My reward when I finish the semester, which is in 2 weeks will be to watch the whole thing.

Kaileyfan1, the first movies were made in 1894. However they were not like movies today. They were mostly just films of anything at all (like the scenery, lol) that lasted only seconds-minutes. They're still interesting to see though.
Also they did not have theatres at first. You paid like a nickel to go into a room with a whole bunch of these viewer-things (can't remember what they're called) and you'd look through the holes (like binoculars) and watch the movie.
